BORROWED MEMORIES COLLECTION
Leah Mendez
Description
Before Uber, before GPS, there was just the backseat and wherever someone else was taking you. Leah Mendez found this moment in a stranger's photograph, a couple sharing the quiet intimacy of a ride, and painted it as something anyone who has ever been a passenger will recognize.
Leah Mendez is a Miami-based oil painter who transforms found photographs, sourced from archives and online platforms, into intimate meditations on memory, connection, and the quietly emotional moments of everyday life. Working intuitively in small formats, she paints strangers with empathy and sustained attention, turning anonymous images into something deeply personal. Her work explores how intimacy can be built without biography, and how looking closely at an unfamiliar face can make it feel, over time, like someone cherished.
