BORROWED MEMORIES COLLECTION
Leah Mendez
Description
Some moments are too alive to stay still. Leah Mendez found this one in a stranger's photograph. Two people mid-spin, caught in that unguarded joy that only happens when no one thinks they're being watched. A memory that belongs to no one and everyone at once.
Leah Mendez is a Miami-based oil painter who transforms found photographs, sourced from archives and online platforms, into intimate meditations on memory, connection, and the quietly emotional moments of everyday life. Working intuitively in small formats, she paints strangers with empathy and sustained attention, turning anonymous images into something deeply personal. Her work explores how intimacy can be built without biography, and how looking closely at an unfamiliar face can make it feel, over time, like someone cherished.
